Course Application Process
The General Education Council has developed course proposal forms which require the attachment or description of a course syllabus and outline, reading assignments, examination procedures, and other relevant information.
Courses may be proposed for General Education designation after approval as permanent (X00-X89) or experimental (X90-alpha) courses. Courses are proposed for designation by departments, not by individual faculty members.
To apply for a Gen Ed designation for an existing course that does not yet have a Gen Ed designation:
- Fill out a pdf or computerized version of form F (Undergraduate Gen. Ed. Designation Proposal, Section I)
- Decide which form, G-O, that matches the designation you are seeking for your course and fill out a pdf or computerized version of the appropriate form
To apply for a Gen Ed designation for a brand new course:
- Fill out a pdf or computerized version of form A (Course Proposal Signature Sheets) and form B (Undergraduate Course Approval Form) on the Faculty Senate website
- Complete steps 1 and 2 listed above
Faculty who want to propose a cluster of courses must receive approval of the General Education Council to submit the courses as a cluster, including form P. The faculty involved must submit to the Council a preliminary proposal describing the focus of the cluster, identifying the courses which will comprise the cluster and the disciplines from which each will be drawn, and the proposed designation of each course in the cluster.
Applications are reviewed by the General Education Council. All courses approved for General Education designation by the General Education Council will be sent to the Faculty Senate for official confirmation. Please be advised that each course designated as a Gen Ed is also reviewed and evaluated every five years. Consult the Course Review Process for further information.
