Learning Objectives
The General Education requirements set specific learning objectives, identified as broad areas where the courses a student takes will have a measurable impact on their learning.
Each student who graduates will achieve:
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- The ability to use mathematical relationships to solve complex real-world problems
- A habit of viewing all situations from a variety of diverse perspectives
- An understanding of fundamental principles across all scientific disciplines, and facility applying those principles in solving problems
- Broad awareness of our literary and artistic heritage
- A well-defined sense of our diverse culture and society, and the ability to interact in a positive and productive way with others of different backgrounds
- A view of our current society informed by a relevant historical perspective
- An objective and intellectual understanding of social interactions
- The ability and confidence to learn independently, and a deep appreciation of the value of learning
- The ability to imagine the consequences of personal choices, and to articulate those consequences with respect to the worlds of nature, work, and politics
The General Education curriculum does this by engaging students in:
- Asking the fundamental questions and developing the principle, ideas, and methods of analysis in the humanities and fine arts, social sciences, mathematics and natural and physical sciences
- The application of these methods of analysis to real world problems and contexts
- Creative, analytical, quantitative and critical thinking through inquiry, problem solving and syntheses
- Pluralistic perspective-taking and awareness of the relationship among culture, self and others
- Understanding and evaluating the consequences of one’s choices and the implications of one’s actions
- Opportunities to develop and practice the skills of critical thinking, reasoning, and communication, including working with ambiguity and multiple perspectives; communicating persuasively and effectively orally and in writing; working effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups; and developing information and technological literacy
With the help of an advisor, each student will construct his or her own sequence of courses that, together, will provide these experiences and lead to the learning objectives of General Education.
